Southwest Harbor is one of the most enchanting harbors on the east coast of the United States. It is near the southern entrance to the glacially formed Somes Sound, the only fjord on the eastern shore of North America. Sunrises are stunning and sunsets have the special quality of being gorgeous in the west as well as in the east since the last golden rays of the setting sun caresses the mountain tops to the east, including Cadillac Mountain towering above the ocean below.
Southwest Harbor was the first place on Mount Desert Island to have hotels and wharves to accommodate steamboats in the earlier nineteenth century.
My love of the outdoors and interest in photography goes back many years. I've always enjoyed photographing landscapes and nature and sharing what I've seen with other people. Like many photographers, I was never happy with the processing done at my local lab and my interest in photography dipped for several years until the advent of digital cameras. I was extremely excited about digital photography and jumped on the opportunity to go digital with a Nikon D300, my first digital camera. My enthusiasm for photographing the outdoors was back and have been enjoying it immensely. When the Nikon D800 with its full frame sensor was released, I upgraded.
